(Warsaw, January 29, 2026) Poland's largest energy company, Orlen, and ABO Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Warsaw on January 27, 2026, concerning the production and supply of green hydrogen to Poland starting in the 2030s. ABO Energy has two hydrogen projects in Finland: the Kurunpuhto hydrogen project in Nivala and the Pyyryväinen project in Oulu. At the same event, Finnish companies Nordic Ren-Gas and VolagHy also signed a similar agreement.

For Orlen, the MoU with its Finnish partners is an important step towards the hydrogen transition and the establishment of supply chains for hydrogen derivatives in Poland.

"The agreements we have signed represent to us a key building block in the development of a European hydrogen ecosystem. They enable us to tap into the expertise, experience, and capabilities of the Finnish companies, ensuring access to competitively priced hydrogen that can be safely stored in Poland and supplied across Central Europe," says Marcin Wasilewski, member of Orlen's transition management team, in the company's press release.

For ABO Energy, the cooperation confirms that there will be demand for green hydrogen produced in Finland. It also provides a higher certainty to move forward with the next stages of Finland's hydrogen projects.

"End of last year, we completed a feasibility study for the Kurunpuhto project. The feasibility study has proven the technical and commercial viability of the project and encourages us to further pursue the sustainable implementation of the project. As a next step, we will proceed with an environmental impact assessment," says Oliver Biegel, Head of the European Hydrogen Team.

ABO Energy will begin to develop a more detailed concept for the Pyyryväinen hydrogen project in Oulu alongside the Kurunpuhto project. Together, these two projects could produce up to 100,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. Both projects would be implemented in phases, with the first phase in Kurunpuhto potentially completed by 2030 and full capacity in both projects reached by 2035.
