ABO Energy celebrates inauguration of first hydrogen project

Hydrogen refuelling station in Hünfeld-Michelsrombach

(Wiesbaden, June 30, 2025) After several years of planning and around 13 months of construction, ABO Energy has now successfully completed the first hydrogen project in company history. The pilot project in Hünfeld-Michelsrombach, Germany, consists of a wind turbine, a 5 MW electrolyser and a hydrogen refuelling station with a trailer filling station. The plant is scheduled to produce up to 450 tons of green hydrogen per year.

“The project marks a milestone for our company, but also for the German energy transition,” says Dr Jochen Ahn, one of the founders of ABO Energy. "The plant is unique in this form in Germany and one of the first projects to produce certified green hydrogen. Only green hydrogen will help us to restructure the energy system sustainably and achieve our goal of reaching greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045." Therefore, it is important that the new German Government puts a focus on the hydrogen sector. Jochen Ahn thanked the many partners from industry, associations and regional and local politics: “The project would not have been possible without people who work passionately every day for what they believe in.”

One of these people is Benjamin Tschesnok, Mayor of the town of Hünfeld. At the opening ceremony, he said: "When ABO Energy first contacted us four years ago, we wanted to be part of this flagship project right away. We see ourselves as an innovative town that is helping to drive forward the energy transition. This project makes an important regional contribution to this."

Internally, it was primarily the Future Energies department that ABO Energy founded twelve years ago. The team carried out initial analyses and feasibility studies and continuously developed the project idea in the HyWheels hydrogen cluster. The partner company ABO Kraft & Wärme – which will also operate the refuelling station – made a decisive contribution to the success planning and implementing the project.

The project is being funded as part of the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology with a total of twelve million euros by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs. Funding for this measure is also being provided as part of the German Recovery and Resilience Plan via the European Recovery and Resilience Facilities (ARF) in the NextGenerationEU programme. The funding guideline is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ).
