The approved Cam Burn I Wind Farm will consist of 4no. turbines with a blade tip height up to 150m, a meteorological mast up to 100m and associated infrastructure. The project is located approximately 2km northeast of Ringsend, 6km Northwest of Garvagh, and 10km southwest of Coleraine in County Londonderry.

The development will be capable of producing between 14.4MW and 17.04MW of electricity dependent on final turbine selection. The wind farm will provide sufficient energy from renewable sources to power between 17,540 and 19,446 homes and will avoid between 22,812 and 25,680 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per annum.

A material start to the development has been made and a Section 170 Application Certificate of Lawfulness (LA01/2022/0168/LDP) has been granted by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council to account for satisfying all negative and pre-commencement conditions as well as completing several construction aspects of the originally approved project (C/2011/0459/F).

News

July 2026

A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) was submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council on 18 June 2026 for a 3no. turbine extension to the approved Cam Burn Wind Farm (C/2011/0459/F and LA01/2022/1209/F). Please find further information here.

April 2026

ABO Energy is pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted for the Cam Burn Wind Farm project (LA01/2022/1209/F). The application was approved by the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Planning Committee on 22 April 2026, marking a significant milestone in the development of the project. ABO Energy is now progressing the next phases of development, including securing an increase to the grid connection offer.

November 2022

A planning application accompanied by an Environmental Statement for an amended Cam Burn Wind Farm consisting of 4no. turbines with a tip height of up to 150m was submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council on 4th November 2022. The amendment application documents are available here: LA01/2022/1209/F.

December 2016

The Cam Burn Wind Farm (C/2011/0459/F) was originally consented on 22nd December 2016 for 6no. wind turbines up to 120.5m tip height delivering 13.8MW of renewable electricity.

The Cam Burn II Wind Farm is proposed as an extension to Cam Burn I. It will include three further turbines to the west of Cam Burn I, along with a battery energy storage facility, a green hydrogen production facility and associated infrastructure. Before the submission of a planning application for Cam Burn II, ABO Energy is hosting a pre-application community consultation from 30th July 2026 until 30th August 2026. Details of the community consultation are included on this webpage.

The proposed Cam Burn II Wind Farm will have an output of between 10.8 MW and 14.4 MW. If developed, it will contribute to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s and Northern Ireland’s economic growth and energy security.

It will also help achieve the renewable electricity consumption target of at least 80 % by 2030 as set out in the Climate Change (Northern Ireland) Act 2022.

Please note: Any comments made to ABO Energy and/or the project team during this pre-application community consultation process are not representations to the planning authority, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. If a formal planning application is submitted, local advertisement and neighbour notification will take place and there will be an opportunity to make representations to the Council at that time.

Environmental Considerations

ABO Energy is currently undertaking a range of environmental assessments relating to the project. This information will then be presented alongside the planning application for consideration by the Council and relevant statutory consultees (technical experts) to assess its potential impact.

Examples of the topics they will consider include:

All considerations are site specific and are informed by detailed surveys and assessments. For the purposes of this pre-application community consultation process we have selected key topics to provide further information on – these are displayed on the project information boards available to download above.

An Environmental Statement will accompany the planning application for the project, scheduled for submission in Q4 2026.

Socio Economic Impact

The proposed wind farm and associated development is expected to generate business rates of between £240,662 and £320,882 per annum, of which 51% will go to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

As well as the creation of jobs across the development, construction and operational phases of the project, the wind farm will include a local Community Benefit Fund of between £27,000 and £36,000 per annum (between £945,000 and £1,260,000 total over a 35-year period).

Grid Connection

ABO Energy has assessed the local NIE Networks infrastructure to inform an indicative grid connection route for the proposed Cam Burn II Wind Farm. The assessment has considered the impact of a grid connection alone, as well as cumulatively, and as part of the wider wind farm development.

This assessment is based on our professional experience of developing other renewable energy projects across Northern Ireland. A grid connection application will be submitted to NIE Networks for the proposed development if it receives planning permission. NIE Networks will then define the final grid connection route and method in a grid connection offer. For this reason, the proposed grid connection that will be assessed by ABO Energy, should best represent the most feasible and likely route NIE Networks would pursue, in our professional judgment.

The indicative route consists solely of underground cable from the proposed Cam Burn II Wind Farm electrical substation to the proposed Cam Cluster Project. The Cam Cluster Project, being brought forward by SONI, consists of a new cluster electrical substation between Limavady and Coleraine to be connected to both the Coolkeeragh – Limavady and the Coleraine – Limavady 110kV circuits. The cluster substation is proposed to be constructed on lands directly south of the junction of Cam Road and Ringsend Road, Limavady. You can find out more about the Cam Cluster substation on the Planning Portal (LA01/2026/0733/F).

Decommissioning

When construction and commissioning of the project is complete, it will be operational for a period of 35 years. When the project is decommissioned, all above-ground structures will be removed and the land restored.

The Planning Process

Your feedback will be considered in detail as work progresses towards finalising our designs and collating all the relevant planning application documents.

It is intended that a full planning application will be submitted to the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council in Q4 2026.

If planning permission is granted, and all other necessary consents are achieved, it is anticipated that the project will take approximately 12-18 months to construct and become operational.
