Project Information

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the proposed Meenakeeran wind farm and battery energy storage project.

The proposed Meenakeeran Wind Farm will have an output of between 18MW and 24MW. If developed, it will contribute to Derry City and Strabane District Council’s and Northern Ireland’s fight against climate change by generating enough renewable electricity to power between 18,616 and 22,763 homes per annum; and removing between 25,013 and 37,669 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum. More renewable energy projects are needed in Northern Ireland to help achieve the renewable electricity consumption target of at least 80% by 2030 as set out in the Climate Change (Northern Ireland) Act 2022.

The proposed Meenakeeran Wind Farm is located at lands north of Tullycar Road, Castlederg. The project will include five turbines with a maximum blade tip height of 150m, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), an electrical substation building, underground cabling, new site access, internal site tracks and turning heads, crane hardstands, spoil deposition areas, a temporary construction compound, haulage and delivery route improvements and passing bays, and all other ancillary works. The project is located approximately 13.3km (by road) from the Magherakeel 110kV substation where it is anticipated the project will connect to the electricity grid (subject to a separate grid connection application process following planning approval). An Environmental Statement was submitted alongside the planning application for the project in September 2025. The planning application reference is LA11/2025/0701/F and documents can be viewed on the NI Planning Portal Website. A hard copy of the application is also available for viewing at Castlederg Library.

Below you will find all the information about the proposed project that was presented during our pre-community consultation event in autumn 2024. Simply click on the ‘MORE’ button at the bottom of each paragraph to read more about that topic.
